Leaf phenology as an indicator of ecological integrity

چکیده
Climate change leads to an increased frequency of severe weather events as well stressful growing conditions. Together these changes may impact the resilience ecosystems. To keep track such effects, conservation managers monitor “ecological integrity” or coherence ecosystem processes, cycling carbon and water. Networked phenocams can produce near-continuous observations leaf function in context climate change, capturing declines due disturbance stress. Here we explore application detect responses stress using 14 examples from PhenoCam Network. We selected previously published new include a variety disturbances form hurricanes, windstorm, frost, insect defoliation, drought. Frost herbivory led both reductions extensions duration rising section greenness curve, while hurricanes generally plateau entire leaf-on period. found that at least ±20% seasonal following peak, ±10% period were reliable signal functional If become increasingly frequent consequence this could ecological integrity through interruptions processes. Bird Composition as an Ecological Indicator of Forest Disturbance Levels
Ecological indicators are needed to evaluate natural biodiversity and to estimate environmental change. I used bird community composition as an environmental indicator to evaluate forest disturbance (at the community level) in areas of Western Mexico. Surveyed bird and vegetation composition data at 79 sites within regions of the Sierra Madre del Sur and Transvolcanic Belt Provinces of Central ...
متن کاملSelecting indicator species to monitor ecological integrity: a review.
We review critical issues that must be considered when selecting indicator species for a monitoring program that aims to maintain or restore ecological integrity. First, we examine the pros and cons of different management approaches on which a conservation program can be based and conclude that ecosystem management is most appropriate. We then identify potential indicators of ecological integr...
متن کاملthe ecological footprint (ef) as the indicator of societies sustainability
with the publication of the brundtland report carried the sustainability discussion into governments and businesses worldwide, much effort has gone into clarifying the meaning of the sustainability concept. to make the concept measurable and applied city sustainable idea, some new method was needed. so the method named ecological footprint has been presented.the ecological footprint method that...
متن کاملLeaf phenology as an optimal strategy for carbon gain in plants1
Since leaves are essentially energy-gaining organs, the arrangement of leaves in time (leaf phenology) and in space (canopy architecture) in both seasonal and nonseasonal environments can be viewed as a central element in plant strategies for carbon gain. Interrelationships among leaf longevity, leaf habit, and leaf-emergence pattern together with shoot architecture affect plant productivity. L...
متن کاملConditional heteroscedasticity as a leading indicator of ecological regime shifts.
Regime shifts are massive, often irreversible, rearrangements of nonlinear ecological processes that occur when systems pass critical transition points. Ecological regime shifts sometimes have severe consequences for human well-being, including eutrophication in lakes, desertification, and species extinctions. Theoretical and laboratory evidence suggests that statistical anomalies may be detect...
